Memorial Day 2018

Poets unsheathe your pens again
remind our leaders what they hold in trust
our nation paid in blood to become free
with equal justice for the common man
Poets we were the soldiers in those wars
we see your world it’s not for that we died

men persecuted if they’re not alike
or taunted for the gender of a spouse
monuments and homelands up for sale
vast wealth stolen by a privileged few
fleeing children turned back at a wall
bullets tearing through your kids at school
a foreign power tilts your voting booths
Lady Liberty’s torch is drowned in tears

yet those better angels hover near
demand your leaders summon them anew
speak truth to power persuade them they must act
to mend this nation’s fractures and its soul
we died for you now you must speak for us
